I have had an idea for a bit of a fan comic of YuGiOh: The Abridged Series for a while now, but there’s been a major hurdle: I have to be able to draw both versions of Yugi for it and that’s apparently harder than it sounds. Sketches prior to this point have turned out horribly. It’s very easy (for me, anyway) to totally mess up Yugi’s hair and face.
This image was created with a lot of help from 3D model referencing, and I have reached this conclusion about Yugi’s hair: Unless facing forward, only half of his hair (that closest to the viewer) is drawn in proper perspective. The rest just poofs out in defiance of all the known laws of physical matter in the universe.
In any case, I think I can draw him adequately enough for a quick little fan comic. When I get some free time and the will to do so, that darn thing can finally become a reality.

RANDOM SUNDAY SKETCHBOOK! Okay, it’s not entirely random. I’m thinking about changing my “default” eye size for the characters, making the eyes generally smaller. Still abnormally huge by human standards, of course, but still. The reason is because huge(er) eyes make it really, really difficult to vary facial structures, and it’s also more difficult to pose the faces at different angles and give them depth. I was actually worried that the difference would be more noticeable, but Sarah and Nanase look natural to me here. There may be no delay to me adapting this slight (but still significant) style change. Opinions? Incidentally, fire dude is just there because I wanted to draw fire dude, though it is true that he’s an example of varying facial structure.

This is a result of John Troutman’s My Life in Sticks, a blog with comics by his character, Molly (AKA the redhead in this image). I’m actually in some of these comics, which means I officially have a shot with any of his female characters! After this one, however, I realized that I wasn’t doing too well with Molly or Nichole, so I decided I would impress them by drawing them in skimpy outfits after having just killed a dragon in Skyrim! What woman wouldn’t want their male friends drawing them in skimpy fantasy outfits?
So, yeah. I can only assume these two fictional ladies will be fighting over me after this. I only hope Nichole isn’t too offended that I made Molly the Dragonborn. I mean, I had to pick one of them for that role, and Molly’s *current* boyfriend is a TV star, so she’s obviously going to be more difficult to impress. Statistical probability demanded I give the role to Molly! Nothing personal, Nichole.
Side note: I was both lucky and unlucky when playing Skyrim to get a reference for the dragon. I was unlucky in that a glitch prevented me from earning a dragon soul for killing the dragon, but I was lucky in that I was left with a perfectly intact dragon to take screenshots of. Yay glitches that will hopefully be patched at some point now that I’m done benefiting from them?
